PECAT™ Receives ATEX Certification

(February 1st 2013)

The offshore Oil and Gas industry is recognized as one of the harshest places to work and as a result requires stringent and thorough safety considerations for all operations; this includes all equipment used offshore.

Following a two year development programme, Pipeline Engineering’s PECAT™ cleanliness assessment tool has received its full Type Approval ATEX 94/9/EC Compliance Certificate from Sira Certification.

ATEX relates to Hazardous Area Installations and covers mechanical and electrical equipment used in areas endangered by potentially explosive atmospheres created by the presence of flammable gases, vapours, mists or dusts. PECAT™ is now ATEX certified for operation in offshore and similar environments where potentially explosive concentrations of gases or vapours may be present.

PECAT is a pipeline inspection tool used to measure the quantity and location of wax, scale or foreign materials present in pipelines, as well as information regarding pipeline ovality, temperature and differential pressure; all this is achieved during one run through a pipeline. This capability makes PECAT™ particularly beneficial when establishing whether a pipeline is clean enough for an effective in line inspection to be carried out. It is also used during operational pipeline cleaning programmes and prior to pipeline decommissioning. PECAT™ has now been successfully run in several pipelines worldwide.

Sira, a UKAS accredited and independent, notified body, worked with Pipeline Engineering to ensure PECAT™ complied with ATEX 94/9/EC requirements. This involved detailed analysis of the PECAT™ tool design to establish its compliance with all relevant safety standards, as well as a full review of relevant supporting quality systems and documentation. As part of this process Pipeline Engineering also received the Quality Assurance Notice of Conformity with EIC 80079-34 covering the manufacture and assembly of ATEX certified products.

Gordon Short, Director of Technical Development at Pipeline Engineering, commented, “PECAT™ has been developed to support the long term integrity of pipelines by monitoring their cleanliness. In developing PECAT™ we recognized the importance of ensuring that it has no impact on safety. We are delighted to now qualify for this ATEX certificate which confirms to customers that this equipment meets the stringent safety regulations for use in hazardous areas.”
